How to Make a 12x12 Scrapbook Kit Work in Your Scrap Journal

Have you ever found a 12x12 scrapbook kit you absolutely loved, only to think, “But how am I going to make that work in my Scrap Journal?”

Don't pass it by!

One of the things I love about working in my Scrap Journal is finding ways to use products that weren't necessarily designed for the smaller format. And 12x12 scrapbook kits are a perfect example.

For this layout, I started with the Creative Memories Simple Page Kit #3 – Noteworthy, but instead of creating the traditional 12x12 layout, I adapted the kit to fit my Scrap Journal.

Start With a Plan Before You Cut

The trick is deciding which part of the original 12x12 design you want to preserve.

Before I make that first cut, I use homemade templates that are the size of my Scrap Journal pages. I can move the template around over the 12x12 paper until I find the section of the design I like best.

This takes some of the nervousness out of making that first cut. ✂️

And I don't necessarily position my template in the same place on every page. Each page gets its own little audition.

Don't Just Make It Smaller

This is probably the most important lesson from the project:

The goal isn't simply to make a 12x12 layout smaller. It's to make the smaller layout look intentional.

Once my base pages are cut, I look at the other pieces included in the kit, such as photo mats, borders and embellishments, and decide how they can work within the smaller space.

Some pieces get trimmed. Some get repositioned. And some don't make it onto the layout at all.

That's okay!

You don't have to use everything in a kit just because it's there.

In the video, I'll take you through the entire process, from positioning my templates and making those first cuts to adding my photos, journaling and final embellishments. Click on this link to go see my YouTube Video: https://youtu.be/1w4-Q6A8ntI

What I especially love about the finished pages is that they don't look like I squeezed a 12x12 layout into a smaller space. They look like Scrap Journal pages that were meant to be this size.

Could This Become a Series?

Spoiler alert…it has! But, I'd love to know what you think about my doing a kit conversion once a month.

Would you like to see me convert more 12x12 scrapbook kits into Scrap Journal layouts?

Leave me a comment on the video and let me know. And if you have a kit you've been hesitant to use because it was designed for 12x12 pages, I'd love to hear about that too.

Until next time, happy crafting!
